
Getting the Heat Right for Wide-Format Low-E Glass
If you’re preheating wide-format Low-E glass, you know the struggle. You need the heat to be perfectly even across the whole sheet. But once your production line hits that 3-meter mark, the usual off-the-shelf infrared lamps just don’t cut it. You end up with these annoying “cold spots” right where the shorter tubes meet. It’s a headache. That’s why we build custom, ultra-long continuous infrared units. They’re made specifically for those massive baking tunnels where “close enough” isn’t good enough. The struggle with length Building a heating element longer than 3 meters isn’t as simple as just buying a longer tube. If you just stretch it out, you run into problems with voltage drop and thermal expansion. We spend a lot of time balancing the wattage per meter. We want the heat density to be exactly the same from the very first centimeter to the last. Because if the power distribution is off, your glass hits the coating chamber with uneven temperatures. And that’s when you start seeing defects or, even worse, the coating starts peeling. The nuts and bolts We use high-purity quartz envelopes to hold the tungsten filaments. Depending on how thick your glass is, we’ll usually go with shortwave or medium-wave output. But here’s a detail people often miss: quartz moves. It expands and contracts as it heats up. If your mounting brackets are too tight, the tubes will literally snap during a power cycle. We wire these into heavy-duty frames that give the material room to breathe. The trade-offs you should know about Now, there’s a catch. Putting a 3-meter+ heating array into your line puts a massive load on your electrical panel. You’ll need to make sure your contactors and wiring can actually handle the total amperage. Plus, there’s the maintenance side of things. These long units get rid of those gaps you find in modular setups, but they’re a bigger commitment. If a section burns out, you aren’t just popping in a small bulb. You’re dealing with a large-scale component. Before you install these, just make sure your team has enough physical space to pull the units out of the tunnel. You don’t want to have to tear apart your entire conveyor just to fix one heater.
