If you’ve ever tried to heat a drafty Workshop changing room with a standard forced-air heater, you know the struggle. You crank the dial, the machine screams, and you spend a fortune heating the air—only for all that warmth to float straight up to the ceiling while your feet stay ice-cold. It’s a waste of money. We do things differently. We use ceiling-mounted infrared heaters that basically ignore the air entirely. Instead of trying to warm the whole room, these units send heat straight down to the floor and the people standing on it. Since we usually install these in places with high ceilings, we pick units with a strong “throw.” This lets us create a warm bubble of comfort without having to seal the room airtight or fight a constant draft. The gear we use We usually go with short-wave or medium-wave emitters. Short-wave is the gold standard here because it hits the target instantly. It’s that “five-star” feeling of warmth the moment a worker walks under the lamp. To make sure they don’t burn out under that kind of intensity, we use quartz glass envelopes. But you have to get the wattage right. If you go too low, you’ll end up with annoying cold spots. Go too high, and you’ve basically built a toaster that makes the room uncomfortable. It’s all about finding that sweet spot based on how high your ceiling is. A few things to watch out for Here is the catch: these units pull a lot of power, especially when they first kick on. If your electrical panel is already struggling, you’re going to trip breakers. You’ll need a dedicated circuit to keep things running smoothly. Plus, you don’t want these running 24/7.
