
Getting the Heat Right for Mobile Glass Repair
When you’re trying to squeeze a continuous annealing heater into a mobile repair bracket, you’re basically fighting for every single millimeter. It’s a tight fit. You’ve got limited voltage and almost no room to breathe, so a standard heater just won’t cut it. You need something that packs a punch—high-watt-density infrared (IR) elements—so you can hit your target temperature without making the whole tool bulky. The struggle with space and power To get enough heat into a tiny setup, we go with shortwave IR. Why? Because shortwave radiation actually sinks into the glass rather than just sitting on the surface. It’s faster. You spend less time waiting for things to warm up and more time actually fixing the glass. By using elements with a higher wattage-to-length ratio, we can keep the heating head small enough to actually be portable. But here’s the thing: you have to be careful with your voltage. If your mobile power supply is capped, we just tweak the filament winding to make sure it still gets hot enough. Just keep in mind that these high-density elements create some intense, localized heat. If you don’t use heat-resistant alloys or some kind of active cooling in the housing, you’re going to fry your electronics. Picking the right parts We usually stick with quartz-halogen tubes. They ramp up almost instantly. To save even more space, we use small-form-factor connectors. Then there’s the coating. A clear tube gives you that raw, deep-penetrating power. But if you’re worried about thermal shock—you know, that scary moment where the glass might crack from uneven heat—a coated tube is the way to go. It spreads the heat more evenly across the surface. The trade-offs These high-density elements are great for shrinking your tool, but they’re thirsty. They pull a lot of current. If your wiring is too thin, you’ll deal with voltage drops. The lamp won’t hit the right temperature, and your annealing cycle will just fail. It’s a headache you don’t want. Make sure your wire gauge is thick enough to handle the load. And a pro tip: pair the whole thing with a precise PID controller. It keeps the temperature steady so you don’t accidentally bake the glass.
