Most recessed infrared heaters work a bit differently than your standard space heater. Instead of trying to warm up all the air in the room, they beam heat directly onto you. It’s that instant, cozy feeling—kind of like stepping into a patch of sunlight on a cold day. But here’s the thing: you can’t just grab the most powerful unit on the shelf and hope for the best. Matching the power to your space If you’re putting a heater in a tiny powder room, keep it simple. A 250W to 400W unit is usually plenty. Go any higher and you’ll turn that bathroom into a sauna in about two minutes. For your average full bath, you’re looking at something in the 600W to 1000W range. Now, if you have a massive master bath, one single lamp isn’t going to do the trick. You’ll end up with one scorching hot spot and a bunch of freezing corners. In those cases, it’s way better to spread out a few 600W lamps across the ceiling. The “Hot Zone” problem More wattage means more heat, but it also means a more concentrated blast. If you put a 1200W lamp in a room with low ceilings, the person standing right under it is going to feel it—and not in a good way. It can feel a bit overwhelming.
