Annealing lab glass is basically a war against internal tension. If your temperature swings by even a few degrees while the glass is cooling, you’re playing Russian roulette with stress fractures. One wrong move and—crack—there goes your hard work. To stop that from happening, we use twin tube infrared heating elements. It’s the only way to hit those tiny tolerances you actually need.
Why two tubes are better than one
Think of it this way: a twin tube setup basically doubles the surface area without taking up more room. With a single-tube lamp, you get these nasty hot spots that can ruin a piece. But the dual-filament design softens everything. It spreads the heat out evenly, giving you a uniform “soak.” That’s the secret sauce. It lets the glass hit its annealing point without accidentally adding new stress to the material.
The obsession with 0.1°C
You might wonder why we sweat the small stuff. Well, the gap between the glass transition temperature and the strain point is incredibly thin. If you overshoot, the glass deforms. If you undershoot, you leave residual stress trapped in the walls. It’s a tightrope walk. We pair our elements with platinum RTDs and high-speed PID controllers to keep things steady. This stops the “hunting” effect—you know, when the temperature just bounces back and forth around the setpoint instead of actually staying there.
A few things to watch out for
Here’s the catch: high-precision infrared arrays are picky about how they’re set up. Since these tubes run hot to keep the infrared flux moving, you need plenty of ventilation. If you cram them in too tight without thinking about airflow, heat will creep into your sensor leads. Suddenly, your 0.1°C reading is a lie. And please, shield your thermocouples. Otherwise, you’re just measuring the temperature of the lamp, not the glass. One last tip? Plug everything into a stabilized power supply. Voltage spikes are a nightmare—they shift your output wattage and throw the whole process off.
