Getting the Placement Right
We use short-wave infrared because it doesn’t care about the wind. It cuts right through the breeze, which is the only way to actually keep a pergola cozy. But you can’t just slap these on a ceiling and hope for the best. If your heaters are mounted high—say, 3 meters up—you need more power to make sure the warmth actually reaches the guests at the table. We usually aim for about 400-600W per square meter. If you get this right, your guests stay longer, order another round of drinks, and you keep those tables turning.
Built for the Elements
Outdoor gear takes a beating. Rain, humidity, and freezing nights can kill cheap electronics. That’s why we use IP65-rated housings to keep moisture far away from the electrical guts. We also use reinforced quartz glass for the heating elements. Why? Because if a freezing raindrop hits a red-hot tube, normal glass can crack. This stuff doesn’t. Power-wise, most of these run on standard 220V-240V. But if you’re running a massive patio, we’ll probably suggest a three-phase setup. It’s a bit more work upfront, but it stops your breakers from tripping right in the middle of a Friday night rush.
The Balancing Act
One thing to watch out for: power draw. These arrays pull a lot of current, so your electrical panel needs to be up to the task. And please, don’t just over-spec the wattage to be “safe.” If you put too much power in one spot, you create “hot spots.” Nobody wants to sit in a seat that feels like an oven while the person next to them is shivering.
